Today, the electric car is becoming more common, and will become even more common. With the electric car, we have a better chance of tackling and mitigating the climate change that is increasingly affecting the world and our daily lives. Driving with an internal combustion engine will soon be a thing of the past.

But switching to an electric car is a process that will take some time. Among other things, we as private individuals must try to understand how electric refuelling works, how to do it, where to refuel and, not least, what does it actually cost?

The electric car is cheaper to drive!

It is cheaper to drive an electric car than a petrol car. According to E.ON’s calculations, by 2022, driving on electricity will be about DKK 7 cheaper per mile than on petrol. It can bring significant benefits if you drive the car a lot.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

Let’s assume we pay 1.5 SEK per kWh. We are going to charge a small to medium sized electric car of 50 kWh. Then you get the cost by calculating 1.5 x 50 = 75 kr. If the electricity goes up to 2 kr per kWh, the price becomes 100 kr instead.

It also costs a lot to install a charging box in your villa. The price for it is around 10 000 SEK. Let’s say we refuel our car every other day on average for 5 years. That’s about 913 refuellings. If we spread out the cost of the charging box over these 913 days, we will have to add about SEK 11 per refuelling.

How much does it cost to charge the car at stations?

At a charging station you pay between 1.5 – 2 SEK kWh. The price depends a bit on the charging station you visit, different charging operators have different prices. You can also charge your car while you eat, for example at McDonald’s. There, charging costs 2.5 SEK per kWh.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car? Sometimes nothing! Some stores attract customers with free charging. Ica and Ikea are among the companies doing so. Here you can charge your car while you shop.

As offers change over time, it’s worth double-checking that free offers are still available, but whether free or not, you can expect to find charging stations at most major retailers and fast food restaurants.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car – it’s cheaper at night!

If you charge your car at home, it may be worth paying an hourly rate. In other words, a contract where you pay for electricity at the price that applies at the time the electricity is used.

Electricity is generally cheaper at night. With an hourly rate, you can then make sure to draw as much of your household electricity and charger as you can during the night, and thus save a little on your energy costs.
